Case studies

There are already hundreds of people in Oxfordshire who are reaping the benefits of self directed support, personal budgets and the flexibility offered by direct payments.

In this section we have brought together personal stories, examples of the work of support broker and example plans.  We hope they will illustrate how self directed support works for local people and provide some inspiration for your own plan, too.

Personal Stories

We have collected some recent personal stories of local people who have taken control of their care and support through support planning and imaginative use of available funds for care.  You can read and download their stories on the 'Personal Stories' page - see the menu on the left.

Broker stories

Support brokers are people who specialise in supporting individuals (and carers) who are making their support plan.  The help find out what is important to the individual concerned, come up with new and different ways of meeting needs if required, and also help with putting arrangements in place.

The broker stories are very illustrative of how brokers work, and the difference support brokerage can make.  You can also click on the link in the menu on the left to go to the broker stories page.

Example Plans

To get an idea of how personal support plans are, and perhaps also as a source of ideas and inspiration, we have added some examples of recent support plans.  The plans are from Oxfordshire people, and describe what they want their care and support to look like using their own words. Some personal details have been edited to protect the individuals' privacy.

'The care system will work for me'

Oxford-based Mark Fysh is the Oxford County Local Government branch secretary of Unison and a lead officer on the TUC’s General Council. Here he explains how he hopes personal budgets will improve his overall quality of life.

'We've never looked back'

Luke Davey has lived in sheltered housing near Berinsfield for 12 years. Despite being diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy and near-blindness, since his late teens he was determined to live as independent a life as possible. His mother, Jasmine, explains how an early introduction to personal budgets has made a world of difference to their lives.

‘I am really happy, and living the life I want to live.’

Direct payments have helped Jenna Witcher, from Kidlington, live the life she wants to live, from holding down a job to going out in the evenings with her Friendship Group.
